About Your Engineering Score

This score would indicate that you have the resources to identify where IIoT can be leveraged in your system. In most cases, this means that you have an adequate level of documentation and understanding of your manufacturing system's infrastructure and a functional SCADA/MES system in place and working. Your OT infrastructure is usable but not fully capable of making "real-time" decisions. At this stage, we can make informed decisions about where new smart sensors and edge devices can replace older devices and where high wear components that can benefit from predictive maintenance may reside.

The engineering section is one that most companies have a higher score in because it is the most approachable and an area where documentation and knowledge are abundant. This area is key to IIoT because it is the infrastructure and base from which the rest of the IIoT system will build. These next steps towards becoming an IIoT/Smart Factory are crucial.

This score would indicate that you have the beginnings of the policies and practices to keep your IIoT system reasonably secure from threats. In most cases, this means that you have a security and monitoring system in place, that you are maintaining policies to keep systems separated and out of harm, and that you understand what is practical and reasonable to keep a system accessible to those who need it. With these policies and practices in place, we can make appropriate modifications to your security infrastructure so that the new connected devices added to your system will not give threats a new entrance to your network.

The cybersecurity and IT section are one in which most companies have an average score because it is the most sensitive and vital to keeping a system safe from bad actors. This area is key to IIoT because it is the network infrastructure that will interconnect the devices, so it is critical to have a solid understanding of what connections and policies are required for daily operation.

This score would indicate that you have the infrastructure and practices that were representative of the 3rd Industrial Revolution. That means you probably have an on-premise or physical database, where basic reporting and queries could be performed daily. These practices were valuable and important to the last generation of manufacturing because they gave managers and executives an understanding of how the machine(s) ran in the past (historical data). But this does not provide any predictive or real-time experience of how their processes are working. These practices do not help users understand what they should be worried about around the corner, just what was happening behind them.

The database section is one that most companies have an average score in because it is an accessible and necessary one for reporting and keeping up to date with their system. This area is hyper-critical to IIoT because the real-time analytics and predictive tools will help operators and managers drive actionable decisions based on quantifiable data.

These are more management and executive concerns for long-term growth and production, but they drive the operations decisions that are made daily. This display and collection allow businesses to quantifiably understand what they have in place for production and drive decisions to be more efficient and meet their customers' expectations, demands, and needs.

The BI section is one that most companies have a low to moderate score in because it is at the next level deliverable and planning stage that can require more coordination and infrastructure. This area is critical to IIoT and might see the most change because the Business Intelligence tools will help managers and executives visualize and capitalize on what is happening in their facilities in order to make real-time informed decisions.
